Our Process
What Are the Types of Hearing Tests?
Our clinic provides different types of hearing tests to check your hearing health thoroughly. One common test is pure-tone audiometry, which measures how well you hear different tones and pitches. Speech testing checks how well you understand words at different volumes. We also test the middle ear to see how well your eardrum and middle ear work.
These tests give us a full picture of your hearing and help us decide on the best treatment. Each test is quick, easy, and performed in a comfortable setting.
An audiologist will explain every step so you know exactly what’s happening.
Puretone testing
Air conduction testing determines the softest tones that a person can hear at different frequencies across the speech range. Bone conduction testing is similar to air conduction. A different type of headphone is used and the results provide addition information regarding if the loss is affecting the outer, middle, and/or inner ear.
Speech testing
For speech testing, a speech reception threshold (SRT) test will be use to confirm the results of the puretone testing. SRTs help determine the lowest level at which the patient can recognize speech.
Additional Tests
Our audiologist may also perform otoscopy (examining the ear canal) and tympanometry (test of the middle ear) to determine the health of the ear canal and the middle ear.
How to Choose the Right Audiologist
Choosing the right audiologist is important. Look for someone experienced, caring, and willing to explain things clearly. During your appointment, you can expect a friendly welcome, a discussion about your hearing concerns, and a thorough evaluation of your hearing. We’ll walk you through each step and answer any questions you have.
Best Practices for Hearing Evaluations
Seeing a doctor of audiology is crucial for your hearing health. Audiologists undergo a minimum of eight years of college education to gain knowledge in all areas of hearing science, including diagnostic audiometric testing, psychoacoustics, electroacoustics, auditory anatomy and physiology, amplification, and hearing implants. Because of the comprehensive nature of audiologists’ education, they can provide medical insights into your hearing loss and recommend the best treatment, which isn’t always hearing aids. aids.
Three Main Types of Hearing Loss
- Sensorineural Hearing Loss is the most common type and occurs when the inner ear or the hearing nerve is damaged. It often occurs with age or from exposure to loud noises. While this hearing loss cannot usually be cured, hearing aid technology can help improve hearing and reconnect patients to what is important.
- Conductive Hearing Loss: This type of hearing loss occurs when sounds cannot reach the outer or middle ear. It might be due to earwax build-up, infections, or a hole in the eardrum. Conductive hearing loss can often be treated with medicine or surgery.
- Mixed Hearing Loss: This type of loss is a combination of both sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. It means there are problems in both the inner ear and the outer or middle ear. Treatment may involve hearing aids, medication, or surgery, depending on the cause.
Hearing Test: What to Expect
When you come in for a hearing test, we’ll start with a discussion about your hearing and any problems you’ve noticed. The test is done in a sound booth with inserted headphones. You’ll listen to both tones and words. The evaluation takes about 30-60 minutes.
Hearing Test Results
After the test, your audiologist will go over your results. You’ll see a graph called an audiogram that shows how well you hear different sounds. We’ll explain what your results mean and talk about the next steps if you have hearing loss. This might include hearing aids, other assistive devices, or further tests.
