What Do Patients Say?

Audiology Frequently Asked Questions

Please give us a call (512) 444-8684 or Click Here for help with any audiology and hearing questions.

If you notice that you’ve been saying “What?” more often, and you are not able to make sense of what others are saying, it may be time to get your hearing tested. A hearing evaluation will assess if you have hearing loss, what type of loss and to what extent. Most of the time, hearing aids can help manage hearing loss, making it easier to hear and connect with others, allowing a more enjoyable time with family, friends and co-workers.

If you don’t hear as well as you used to and/or have any concerns re: your hearing, it is time to visit an audiologist and have your hearing evaluated. Hearing loss onset is often gradual; it may be difficult to detect in the early stages. If you notice you’ve been turning up the volume on the TV, having difficulties hearing on the phone, struggling to comprehend or follow group conversations, and missing calls/alarms/doorbells, it’s time to get a hearing evaluation.

Hearing aids are an investment in your hearing health, with a general range from $2450-3450* per device, which includes hearing services for the length of your warranty. *Consult your audiologist for the best service package and length of warranty for your hearing healthcare needs. If you are not seeing your hearing professional for the evaluation, treatment, programming, updates, and service of your hearing aids, you won’t enjoy the maximum benefits of the technology. Regardless of the brand and model, the best hearing instruments are the ones that are fit and programmed according to your hearing needs and where ongoing service is part of your treatment package.

Some insurance companies cover hearing aids and hearing services; many do not cover hearing aids. Some insurers offer optional hearing plans that include specific coverage for hearing tests and hearing aid fittings.

We are happy to provide you with a 30-minute no-charge consultation to see our office, meet our staff and have your initial questions answered. This will give you an opportunity to see if our practice is the right fit for you and your hearing healthcare needs. If you decide to continue with us for hearing healthcare services, including ear cleanings, hearing evaluation and/or adjustments to current hearing aid technology, another appointment will be scheduled for you.

Self-referral is an option if you are willing to pay for audiology services out of pocket. If you do not have insurance coverage for hearing healthcare, or are not planning to use your current insurance coverage, there is no need to see a doctor for a recommendation.

To date, all diagnostic audiological procedures that are covered by Medicare require a referral from a physician. There must be a specific symptom, sign, or complaint that highlights the need of each diagnostic procedure or treatment.

Hearing aid dispensers (HADs) are fully certified experts who evaluate hearing and offer aftercare for hearing aids. Hearing aid dispensers must be certified and licensed in order to use hearing technology. Audiologists can assess and diagnose a larger range of hearing and balance problems. An audiologist may be more appropriate for medically related services such as balance issues, earwax impactions, and noise-induced hearing loss. Both specialists may do hearing aid maintenance, cleaning, and repairs, as well as fitting and adjustment.

Tinnitus Frequently Asked Questions

There is no cure for tinnitus but there are many things to investigate and potentially treat to reduce the effects of tinnitus.

The first step is to check that your ears are clean and healthy. If your ear canals are clogged with wax or if you have fluid trapped behind your eardrums, that can increase your perception of tinnitus. If there is earwax, it should be removed. If you have fluid trapped behind your eardrums, you should see an otolaryngologist (ENT doctor) to treat the fluid.

Additionally, certain medications and supplements can cause or exacerbate tinnitus so you should speak to your prescribing doctor or pharmacist about whether potential side effects could include tinnitus.

Assuming all the aforementioned factors are taken care of, many people find relief by using masking noise. For someone who is only bothered by the tinnitus when trying to fall asleep, this can be as simple as running a fan or white noise machine at bedtime. For someone who would like more consistent masking noise, many hearing aids can generate a masking noise which can either play all the time or be switched on and off as needed. Many hearing aids can also connect to smartphones and play music or whatever sound you prefer from apps on your phone.

Some people find relief for their tinnitus by pursuing counseling in the form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

If tinnitus is caused by an underlying issue, like medication or untreated hearing loss, often treating the cause of tinnitus is a way to find relief. Many people also find a reduction in the impact of their tinnitus by implementing sound therapy and meditation into their lifestyle.

Often times treating the underlying cause of tinnitus can greatly reduce tinnitus. Tinnitus can be caused by various things like stress, medication, untreated hearing loss, and many more. If treating the underlying causes of tinnitus is not enough to provide relief, there are strategies that can be implemented to help reduce the impact of tinnitus on your life. As technology improves, more and more solutions will become available with emerging technology.

We have been serving the city of Austin and beyond for over 40 years and counting for all your hearing healthcare needs.
